The Southern ‘Explorer’ begins in a secret location on The Eastern Beaches Coastal Walkway and concludes with a memorable walk from Manly to Collaroy along The Northern Beaches Coast Walk. As such, it provides walkers with the opportunity to experience the best of both worlds either side of the Harbour.
South Coogee to Watsons Bay (16km)
The tour departs The Rocks at 7.30am as we head by private transfer to our starting point in South Coogee. Our first days’ walk hugs the coastline as we head north from Coogee along The Eastern Beaches Coastal Walkway. With numerous beaches, dramatic clifftop sectors and endless panoramic views, the Walkway is the perfect introduction to The Emerald Way.
The impressive ‘Sesquicentenary Boardwalk’ (opened 2009) behind Waverly cemetery as well as the wildly popular Bronte to Bondi path are both encountered by midday, so there’s a chance to have a swim at the iconic Bondi Icebergs before we enjoy our lunch at the Iceberg’s Bistro.
In the afternoon, a quick private transfer brings us to the Federation Cliff Walk as we head toward Watsons Bay. Towering cliffs, a lighthouse (or two) and of course the broiling cauldron that is The Gap are all encountered before we arrive at The South Head Heritage Trail which soon loops back to our accommodation, The Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel. There’s time to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures before re-joining your group for an evening feast at The Watsons Bay Beach Club.
Watsons Bay to Manly (10.2km)
We start the day with a private water taxi transfer to The Spit where we enjoy a 2-hour guided kayak tour of Middle Harbour. After changing back into our walking gear we then have lunch in a bistro overlooking marina.
After lunch we head across the Spit Bridge to join the Manly Scenic Walkway, a 10km harbour-side route. There’s some significant Aboriginal rock carvings to be admired, the intriguingly named Forty Baskets Beach to traverse and the arrival at our hotel overlooking Manly Beach is always special.
We will be dining tonight at the Manly Pavilion restaurant.
Manly to Collaroy and return to Sydney CBD (11km)
We begin our third day by joining the Northern Beaches Coast Walk admiring as we go the spectacular ocean views, multiple beaches and picturesque ocean pools. In season (May-September) this is classic whale sighting territory but even if it’s not that time of the year the flora and fauna along this coastal path is always fascinating. After rounding Dee Why Lagoon (a mini eco-system in itself) and the Long Reef Headland (watch out for paragliders floating above) we arrive at the beachside Collaroy Hotel for lunch.
